20th Annual Student Art Exhibition at Delta College

The L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery at Delta College presents the 20th Annual Student Art Exhibition & Awards Competition from April 25 to May 17.

An opening reception and awards presentation will be held Thursday, April 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Gallery exhibitions are free and open to the public.

This exhibit features the artwork of Delta College students. The annual juried exhibition is open to students of all visual art disciplines across the Delta campus, providing an opportunity for studio arts majors to receive recognition and prizes. Students competing for an award submit the body of work along with a written statement explaining their creative goals.

Student art awards are sponsored by the Clancy Family Foundation and the Horton Art Gallery Foundation. Seven disciplines are awarded $100 each, including ceramics, drawing, graphic arts, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Four merit awards for $50 are also awarded, along with a $200 prize for the Best in Show. Awards are granted based on technical proficiency, creativity, and demonstrated growth within the visual arts.

The Gallery Committee has invited Delta College alumna Judy Shintani to select the artwork and awards for this year’s student show. Shintani has a master’s degree in transformative art from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, and a bachelor’s of science degree in graphic design from San Jose State University. She attended Delta College and studied design, journalism, and biology. Her artistic career focuses on community engagement, art concerning culture, the Japanese-American internment, and women’s issues.

Shintani has exhibited throughout the United States and internationally. She is a faculty member at Foothill College and an adjunct faculty member for JFK University. Shintani owns and runs the Kitsune Community Art Studio in an old dairy barn in Half Moon Bay. She is a member of the Asian American Women Artists Association and sits on the board of the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art.

About the Horton Art Gallery

The Horton Gallery is a program of the Art Department of the Division of Arts & Communication, and is a premier exhibition space located on the Delta College campus. The primary mission of the Gallery is to support student learning outcomes in the visual arts curriculum by building knowledge within the aesthetic, technical, cultural, and historical context of the visual arts. The Gallery offers excellent exhibition opportunities to local, regional, and national artists, lenders and guest curators. The Gallery presents artists’ work in all media, with no thematic or geographic restrictions. Student exhibitions are held annually at the end of spring semester. Exhibitions are selected through a call for entries process, juried by the Gallery Committee and guest jurors.

The Gallery is located on the ground floor of Shima Center, and is wheelchair accessible. Admission is free and open to the public. Recommended parking is available in the Shima lot for a fee of $2. Tours are welcome, and Gallery talks and special needs may be addressed by contacting the Gallery.
